Lead and cadmium test is a quick and efficient way of proving that jewelry is safe and healthy to use. It stands as the primary test employed by all regulators to guarantee the product's safety and quality.

Why test jewelry?

At Joom, we prioritize the safety of our customers and are committed to ensuring that all our jewelry products are safe and health-conscious, complying with relevant regulations. Regulators regularly test jewelry products sold on the Joom Marketplace for lead and cadmium. Joom plans to include lead and cadmium testing as a requirement for selling jewelry on the platform.

What is involved in lead and cadmium testing?

Lead and cadmium testing for jewelry involves analyzing a sample of the jewelry to determine whether it contains these two toxic metals, which can be harmful to human health.

The testing process for lead and cadmium typically involves the following steps:

1. Sample Preparation: A small portion of the jewelry is taken and prepared for analysis. This may involve cutting or grinding the jewelry to create a fine powder that can be tested.
2. Acid Digestion: The sample is then treated with an acid solution to break down the metals in the jewelry and release them into a liquid solution.
3. Instrumental Analysis: The liquid solution is analyzed using specialized equipment, such as an atomic absorption spectrometer or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, to determine the concentration of lead and cadmium in the sample.
4. Interpretation of Results: The results of the analysis are interpreted to determine whether the jewelry contains lead or cadmium, and if so, whether the levels fall within safe limits.

What products require testing?

All jewelry products, worn on the body or skin, require testing for lead and cadmium. You should test each material used in a product, including precious metals.

If the same material is used in a necklace, earrings and bracelet, then only one test is required to show compliance. But if you have earrings (material A), necklaces (material B) and bracelet (material C), then three different testing reports are needed.

How to conduct the test?

The testing should be conducted by a reputable third-party laboratory that specializes in material analysis and testing. There are no limitations regarding labs, but we preferably accept accredited labs from Nando list, etc.

The laboratory should perform this analysis and provide you with a report of the results in English. The name of the test report is 'Lead and Cadmium test for Jewelry'. However, different test labs may have different internal names. The standards to test for are as follows: 

• ASTM F2923-14 Consumer Product Safety for Children's Jewelry
  • 1.1 Total lead content in substrate materials#
  • 1.2 Total cadmium content in metal or plastic / polymeric materials#
• Entry 27 of Regulation (EC) No 552/2009 amending Annex XVII of REACH
  Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (previously restricted under Directive 94/27/EC &
  2004/96/EC) - Nickel release.
